The Inspiration Behind Lazy Susan
When I started designing my game Lazy Susan, I wanted to make something simple yet fun, where players spin a table to grab food and score points. The idea for the game came from a real-life item–a rotating tray often used at meals–called a lazy susan. As I learned more about its history, I found it interesting how the lazy susan has been a part of dining culture for centuries in many countries.
The history of the lazy susan isn’t entirely clear, but some believe it dates back to the 18th century. There’s a story that it might be linked to Thomas Jefferson, who had a daughter named Susan, but this isn’t confirmed. However, it’s known that lazy susan became popular in American households in the early 1900s, making it easier for people to serve themselves at large dinners without asking others to pass the dishes.
In China, the lazy susan is especially important for large family meals and banquets. Since many Chinese meals involve shared dishes, the round shape of the lazy susan is perfect for allowing everyone to easily access the food. The idea of sharing and togetherness really inspired me, as it’s something I wanted to capture in my game.
Interestingly, in Indonesia, where I’m based, Chinese culture has had a huge influence on our food. Many dishes in Indonesia, like noodles and dumplings, were introduced by Chinese traders who brought their culinary traditions with them. As a result, lazy susans are often used in Chinese-Indonesian restaurants during family gatherings and special occasions.
What began as a practical tool for meals in the U.S., China, and even Indonesia has become a symbol of bringing people together. When I designed Lazy Susan the game, I wanted to recreate that feeling of connection, but with a fun, competitive twist. The simple spin of the table adds excitement, while also keeping that sense of sharing.
As I continue to improve the game, I’m excited about building on this idea. Whether it’s at a dining table or in my game, the lazy susan has a special way of bringing people closer together, whether to eat or play. Curious about how a lazy susan can turn into a game? Play Lazy Susan and find out!
